I’m among, so many women who wishes she had mastered these 5 essential homemaking skills before having kids. Not only will these skills help prepare girls for life outside the home, but these essential homemaking skills will also help girl have the confidence they need to carry out God’s plan for their life.

Helpful homemaking skills every girl should learn: 1. Cooking, meal planning

Cooking is so important! Healthy hearty meals are invaluable. Cooking cuts down on eating out which cuts down on eating unhealthily and ultimately saves money. Girls can learn to cook as early at 8 and begin helping in the kitchen as early as 2. Teaching this skill early will pay off! A friend of mine with 6 kids 4 of whom are teen girls, has a fantastic thing going for them. Each one of her daughters makes a meal once or twice throughout the week. They love looking up recipes online and choosing meals to cook their family. How cool!

I asked my 97-year-old grandmother what she thinks the most important things to teach girls is and she said, “keeping the house clean.” I really struggle with this. Most of us moms feel like “it’s just easier for me to do myself.” Us moms would rather do the work ourselves rather than train and pester our kids. My family is at the very beginning stages of learning how to follow a cleaning routine. Our imperfections are loud, but everyone in a while I see a glimpse of improvement, that reminds me my efforts are worth it!

Stuff can accumulate so quickly, and it is important to regularly go through it. Dana K. White and Cass from Clutter Bug are my favorite gals to listen to listen to for advice on these topics. The goal for organizing and decluttering is not perfection, but to get our children into good habits.

Laundry is a great skill to have down before children leave the house. There are a lot of steps to doing laundry from start to finish, and it might take some time to get there. So far, my girls do the simple tasks of taking their dirty clothes to the laundry and putting away their clean ones. Sometimes they sit with me and fold or put laundry on hangers. My hope is that by the time they leave the house, they are able to do their laundry along with other items from start to finish and not be intimidated.

This skill is so important. Money management will follow children their whole lives. Our family has a list of chores on the fridge with the amount of money each chore is worth. the kids then take that money and buy something they want. The girls also have money boxes with three categories: spend, save, give. My husband and I agree our little system is a great jumping off point for managing finances.
