Faith on Fire: Living Faith as a Modern Catholic

Going to mass every Sunday, holding life sacred, and holding onto joy are all part of living faith as a modern Catholic. Living life as a modern Catholic takes fire to want to live out the faith, and the flame of living out that faith is a purifying fire.

Going to Mass Every Sunday

Going to mass with little kids has never been easy, and not always a priority for Parents in the modern era. Toddler shenanigans mass is a hard mix. I don’t know a single person who has going to mass with babies and toddlers figured out. I’ve made the trip to the back of the church more times than I can count. Showing up to mass every Sunday with my children isn’t easy but I know bringing my kids to Jesus is one of the best things I can do for them. God offers us and our children countless blessing by showing up to mass when it’s hard.

Holding life sacred

My Husband and I chose to carry our baby with Trisomy 13 as long as possible while giving her dignity and love in the process. Most babies don’t make it as far as Perpetua did because of abortion. When God asks Catholics to do something bold in the Modern world, hearts soften and lives change. When we decided to live boldly by holding our daughter’s life sacred, we were able to live our faith and convictions to the fullest. We were able to carry our cross and invite all those around us to partake in God’s promise that good and everlasting life would come from obedience to Him. If we did not hold the value that all life is sacred, we wouldn’t have gotten a funeral, we wouldn’t have been able to hold her, we wouldn’t have had the support and closeness of our community, and most importantly we would have stepped outside of God’s Love.

Holding onto Joy

Joy is a fickle thing; joy is difficult as a modern Catholic to keep. The world is confused about what happiness is and how to obtain it. True joy is holding onto God’s love so close that there is lightness in the soul. In addition to this understanding God kindles the flame that gives joy by allowing us to suffer. When we suffer, we are giving the opportunity to see God’s love proven to us again and again.

“It is characteristic of God and his angels to bring to the soul, when they occupy it, true happiness and spiritual joy; and to drive from it the sadness and trials which the enemy incites in it.” St. Ignatius of Loyola

Holding Kids to a higher standard.

Expecting my kids to live a virtuous life means they don’t always get to consume the entertainment they want. It means not letting them do whatever they want. It means requiring our girls to wear modest clothing and acting in a way that dignifies themselves and others. Holding kids to a high standard is lacking in the modern world. It’s not easy but it’s worth it!
