As my children get older, I’m amazed by discover all the things they are capable of. Having them take part in making breakfast makes my morning routine lighter, and it allows them to practice independence. Here are 10 simple ways a young kid can help cook breakfast!

Here are 10 things that young children can help cook in the kitchen during breakfast time.

  1. Make an omelet and scramble eggs: My eight-year-old has made a few omelets. I showed her the recipe a few times, and she got it and was so excited. She loves to get tomato’s and basil from the garden to add to the dish.
  2. Make Bagels with Cream Cheese: Toasting bread and bagels on their own gives me a break in the morning and gives them the opportunity to stretch their independence.
  3. Microwave: Just about anything can be microwaved: my eight- and seven-year-old can both use a microwave. They need guidance on how much time is appropriate for each dish they want to cook. I remind them of the safety, rules, and they do well! I usually advice under two-minute cook time.
  4. Make Oatmeal: Mary-Margaret has been helping make oatmeal since she was five, but she has been making it on her own since she was 7. If kids can pour milk and use a microwave, it’s so beautiful to see them making a hot meal.
  5. Prepare a bowl of cereal: My oldest can serve all of her siblings’ cereal for breakfast if I ask her to.
  6. Make Pancakes/ waffles: Making pancakes is one of my girl’s favorite things to cook. My seven-year-old is the best pancake flipper ever because she is so patient. Waffles are also a hit. I usually get the waffles out of the iron to avoid any steam burns.
  7. Banana Pumpkin Bread: Kids love to help make this as much as they like to eat it!
  8. Make Fruit Salad: This is an awesome one. Kids love to make fruit salads! Making fruit salads allows them to rinse cut and mix.
  9. Make a Smoothie: Kids love putting ingredients in the blender! My daughter enjoys pushing the Blend Button. Don’t forget Hold the top of the smoothie maker for your child!
  10. Make biscuits or form donuts: Mixing the ingredients and forming the biscuit dough or donut dough with a cup is fun and easy.

Children are capable of cooking and helping with almost anything in the kitchen. Kids have more potential than we give them credit for. Time, tools and gentle instruction is all they need to help in the kitchen.
